Artist Spotlight: Northern Board Co.

northern board co.

Northern Board Co. is co-owned by Bodie and Becca Smith who are a husband and wife team of artists.  Their goal is to bring art to Alberta in a unique way!  Aside from art, longboarding has been a passion for both since a young age.

Bodie began making longboards at the age of thirteen and painting his own graphics on them.  Both have excelled in the arts; Bodie as a painter with private and university education, and Becca with University art experience, including pottery, sculpting, painting, wood burning, and welding.  Naturally these two passions of longboarding and art have been combined to form Northern Board Co.

The mission statement of Northern Board Co. is "every board has a story," which you can see in every unique hand painted board produced by Bodie or Becca.  Each board is one of kind including all the custom work done for many people wanting a design personal to them.  Not only is Northern Board Co. a brand of longboards but also a clothing brand in which you will see t-shirts, hoodies, and hats designed and screen printed by Bodie and Becca.

Most of the designs you will see on the longboards and merchandise at the market are heavily inspired by things you will find here where we live, in the North!  Bodie and Becca would like to thank all who have supported them in pursuing their dreams as artists and are looking forward to seeing you at the Hawk and Harvest market this season!

Walls Woodcraft.

“From the front door to the dining table and beyond” is a phrase that could be used when it comes to describing the array of work services offered by Walls Woodcraft Inc. The company was established in August of 2015 by local owner/Red Seal Journeyman Cabinetmaker Devon Walls with the vision of providing a personalized experience while producing quality over quantity. Make no mistake that Walls Woodcraft Inc is a new comer to the industry as the company may still be infant, their experience is not. Holding 12 years of hands on experience in a versatile form of custom cabinets and kitchens, commercial mill work, high end custom finish carpentry, specialized fine woodworking, and handcrafted custom furniture.

When it comes to the pieces of furniture crafted by Walls Woodcraft Inc, they are created with a passion and love for wood. The passion is to create one of a kind pieces that stay true to nature by designs that let the tree speak for itself whenever possible. Form is met by function in a sense of being aesthetically pleasing and holding true to it's purpose. The process is started where materials are hand selected for the best yield and to ensure defects are absent or meant to look like a part of the design. Mixed methods of work are used to arrive at the best results using a hybrid style of woodworking via hand tools, power tools, and often handmade tools. Attention to detail is carried throughout the whole process to enhance and bring forward the true beauty of nature itself.

Some products you can expect to see are kitchenware, home decor, and one of a kind pieces of furniture. Come on down and check out your one stop shop for quality ALL WOOD products and more.

Walls Woodcraft will be at Hawk + Harvest all weekend!

Artist Spotlight: Knitnaks

Knitnaks is a handmade small business that started out as nothing more than a hobby.  Taryn Nakamura, the creator, started knitting at the age of 10 when her grandmother taught her.  It wasn’t until a few years ago that she really found her passion for knitting and began to make both functional and fashionable knitwear.  Inspired by textures, colours and the prairie/mountain landscape that surrounds Calgary AB, her pieces are perfect for a day in the mountains or for grabbing a coffee with a friend.

Knitting is a timeless craft that has grown into a strong community of makers, Taryn is here to share her take on modern knitting designs.  Toques, mittens, scarves and headbands are all made individually by Taryn, she spends a great deal of time curled up knitting each piece with passion and care.  Be sure to check out newly added items this year including newborn and toddler toques.  All knit items are made from soft cruelty free materials that will keep you and your little ones warm!

Knitnaks will be at Hawk + Harvest for both days!

Friday (Dec 8) 5 - 10 PM
